Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 3rd to 5th Grade (Ages 8 to 12)

Subject/Topic: Physical Education- Aerobic Exercise

Duration: 1 hour

Materials: Laptop, Speakers, Music, Projector, iPads, Cones, Bosus, Aerobic Steps, Jump

                   Rope

Standards:AL-ALEX-PE-2009.4.13 Analyze varying intensities of exercise for effect

on heart rate using manual pulse-checking or heart-rate monitors.

AL-ALEX-PE-2009.5.12 Describe how aerobic exercise affects the

efficiency and longevity of the heart and lungs.

AL-ALEX-PE-2009.6.11 Analyze exercise and heart rate data to

determine adjustments to health fitness plans.

National Physical Education Standards/ Standard 3 - The physically literate individual demonstrates

the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and

                   fitness.
Health Education Standards/Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-

enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)/LS1.A. Structure and Function. In multicellular organisms,

the body is a system of multiple interacting subsystems. These subsystems are groups of cells that

work together to form tissues and organs that are specialized for particular body functions.

Common Core State Standards/RST.6-8.9 - Compare and contrast the information gained from

experiments, simulations, video, or multimedia sources with that gained from reading a text on the

                    same topic.

Objectives: Address what aerobic exercise is
Address how we achieve aerobic exercise

Address what aerobic exercise does for us

Introduction: To begin the lesson I'll have students jump rope, running laps

around the gym and then we will do a relay race. Once we complete those three activities                         I'll ask the students what they think that the three activities have in common.

Activities/ Procedures: Students are to access http://www.ahanflplay60challenge.org/field-trip and watch

the 30 minute video. Students are to watch this video and participate with the

video anytime they do a physical activity. Students are expected to listen to the

video and understand what aerobic exercise is and what it does for your heart.

Main Activities Assessment: Students will be informally questioned through class with the following

                                             questions:

                                                    What is aerobic exercise?

What is one way you could achieve aerobic exercise?

What is your body doing when you achieve aerobic exercise?

What does aerobic exercise help your body do?

Then a small quiz at the end of class asking above questions again to assess if

each indiviual student understands on their own.
